Web proxy servers serve two primary purposes: network security and performance. An integrated Web proxy organization can save bandwidth costs if the server caches large files such as images and media. The cost of building a Web proxy is usually low, so IT is an inexpensive part of IT with cost-saving benefits.
Anonymous internal IP address
In today's corporate world, employees must have access to the Internet, but providing open, unrestricted access to the Internet leaves companies vulnerable to multiple threats. When an employee connects to a server controlled by the attacker, the outgoing IP address is logged on the server. Normally, this is a router IP address, but an attacker can use this IP for a denial of service (DoS) attack. It can also tell an attacker that your employees are browsing the site, enabling the attacker to create more targeted attacks, such as phishing.
For a Web proxy server, the IP displayed in the Web log is the IP of the Web proxy, which means that an attacker will not be able to access the outgoing IP address of the corporate router. An attacker can still launch a DoS attack on a proxy server, but this threat is more manageable than the target internal router.
Anonymous outgoing IP addresses are also important when performing sensitive operations online. For example, law enforcement conducting an investigation on a website does not want to expose the internal IP address that led investigators to return. Third party web agents will facilitate investigations and any other Internet traffic that should be anonymous.
