What is the difference between a proxy server and a reverse proxy?

1.Proxy servers and reverse proxies both act as buffers between the Internet and the computers behind them, but in two different ways. Recall that a proxy server handles traffic to and from a Web server on behalf of a client or client network. As you might imagine, reverse proxies are just the opposite.

2. A reverse proxy sits between a group of Web servers and the Internet and processes traffic on behalf of these servers. In this way, organizations with many different servers (for example, large web sites with multiple types of products and services) can place all their servers behind a public-facing Internet presence. Just as a forward proxy ensures that no server can directly contact the client behind it, a reverse proxy isolates its server from client traffic.

The distinction between proxy and reverse proxy is subtle but important. In summary: The proxy is in front of the client and the reverse proxy is in front of the server.
